A hefty route through The Green Heart

A bicycle route along several lakes in the National Landscape The Green Heart.

There is no better place to start a long route than here in the middle of The Green Heart. This peat meadow area is National Landscape which means there is a combination to be seen of nature, cultural history and agricultural area. There are 20 such unique combinations designated in the Netherlands. You cycle through this unique landscape along a number of large waters; the Langeraarse Plassen, Geerpolderplas, Westeinderplassen, Braassemermeer and the Noordeinderplas. On your route you will cycle through an allotment area. The elongated lots are characteristic of this area. With the drying of the peat, the soil subsided. Embankments formed and dikes were built for protection. Over the centuries there have been struggles with soil that was too wet, then too dry again. Regularly the unique difference between the low land and the high water is clearly visible. Foreigners therefore wonder if people in the Netherlands are not always afraid of the water. You can quietly continue to enjoy the views and the special birds that live here: a blue heron colony, the spotted woodpecker, goshawk and special species of ducks. After this special route, it is great to relax at your final destination.
