A route along Frisian waters

Views of water and land in The Frisian Lakes.

From the Eetkavee Dikke Tut you can ride this nice long route through the Frisian landscape. Soon after departure you cycle along the Tsjonger. You will cross this with a ferry. Be careful, it requires some manpower. You will have to turn the crank yourself to make the crossing. As a reward you will be treated to a very nice view from the water. Along the Tsjonger you will cycle to the Braandemeer lake, which you will cross. This lake is part of the Brandemeer nature reserve. Peat extraction has created holes which have been transformed into lakes and marshland. Reeds and grasslands alternate with the water. Through small villages and past large farms you cycle to the IJsselmeer, the largest lake in the Netherlands. This lake was named after the river IJssel and was only created after the Afsluitdijk was built and the Zuiderzee was closed off. Through the atmospheric fortified town of Sloten, near the Slotermeer, you drive along the Prinses Margriet Canal towards the Tjeukemeer. The views ahead are endless. Water and vast grasslands alternate during this route. You can enjoy this on the terrace of the Eetkavee.
