Route around Borne

Along rivers and streams you will cycle through Overijssel.

From Landgoed De Lavei you cycle along the small river De Bornsche Beek towards Borne. The farm once had a small harbor which served the local fishery and peat trade. Borne was first mentioned in 1206. In 1895 Borne was the first rural municipality in the Netherlands with its own power plant and electric street lighting. In Borne, history can still be felt. The Oude Kerk, the Klopjeswoningen and the Bussemakershuis is just a small sample of the list of monuments and well worth seeing. Through Borne, the route continues past the Woolde flood plain and over the highway. While you enjoy the tranquility and space of nature, the hustle and bustle of traffic races beneath you. Between the Twickeler Vaart, the Oelerbeek and the Azelerbeek you cycle northward. This is what is so characteristic of the province of Overijssel; rivers and streams running through the sandy soils.
