A route along The Veluwe and the IJssel River

Enjoying nature and water.

Laag-Soeren is located on the southeastern edge of National Park the Veluwezoom. The first part of the bicycle route goes over the Veluwe. You can enjoy forest, heathland and the occasional sand dune. You can pass summer oaks, sweet chestnuts and birches among which live mammals such as red deer, boar, foxes and badgers, among others. But also rare birds like the kingfisher and six of the seven reptile species native to the Netherlands (such as the ring snake) are found in the park. In the village of De Steeg stands estate and Middachten Castle. For centuries this has been within the same family and still privately owned. The doors and gates are open to wander the estate or admire the gardens. Access to the castle is possible only on Sundays. The route continues along the Valeplas to the Middachterbeek. The estate owes its name to this area. The streams that flow through the estate landscape between Middachten and Dieren, originate in the spring forests on Middachten. Past the highway, you cycle through the Dierensche Hank. A hank is a gully that is not in continuous connection with, in this case, the IJssel. Passing old houses that stand on the IJssel and the village of Dieren, you return to the campsite.
