This bicycle route runs right through the distinctive polder landscape of the Upper Betuwe, through characteristic villages and overlooking beautiful orchards and the Lek River.
The start of this fine bicycle tour is in Beusichem, formerly part of the county of Buren, whose history dates back to the tenth century. The name of the place has been subject to many changes, characteristic of its long history. With an almost constant view of the Lek and its floodplains, the cyclist here can enjoy the vastness of the polder landscape, with long rows of pollard willows, winding ditches and narrow dike roads as a backdrop to the captivating background. Through Culemborg, with the remains of a former castle, the route leads through Everdingen to Hagestein, best known for its large weir. From here we say goodbye to the river for a while and cycle south through a piece of Utrecht. On this stretch we pass villages with flowery names like Overboeicop and Hei- en Boeicop, with a still fully restored seesaw mill, a model built especially for polders that can turn almost entirely. The route leads eastward, via the Assche Wetering, a typical Betuwe polder landscape, to Buren, where the town hall, along with the adjacent park, is the major eye-catcher. From Buren, the beautiful route bends north again, giving the cyclist a view of the Lek River again, with the glorious fortified town of Wijk bij Duurstede as the backdrop panorama.
