Industrial and historical heritage in Zeeland Flanders

This junction route takes you through the canal zone of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen.

This junction route takes you through the canal zone of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. This is an area rich in industrial and historical heritage. During the Eighty Years' War, this was the front line. The canal from Ghent to Terneuzen has been the focus of industrial development since 1880.
From 1551 there was a lock in Sas van Gent that gave access to a canal to Ghent.
In the 19th century, this canal was extended to Terneuzen. The Sasse lock complex was expanded several times then and later. In 1968, during a new canal renovation, the locks were permanently demolished. These locks were located near the bridge over the canal.
The first part of the route follows the \"Graafjansdijk\", a sea wall from the early Middle Ages.
You will also see modern developments such as wind farms, solar meadows, greenhouses fired with industrial residual heat and the new sea lock of Terneuzen along the way.
