The conquered land of the Gelderse Poort

Cycle into Nijmegen through the Gelderse Poort.

Where the Rhine enters the Netherlands it soon splits into the Waal. The area around it is called the Gelderse Poort. This area around Nijmegen, after a long struggle with the water, has finally been conquered by man. The swampy area around the river has slowly become drier and now has a beautiful, peaceful appearance. Many farms, hamlets with mansions and mills adorn the landscape. Doornenburg Castle is definitely worth seeing. Animals such as deer, dragonflies, konik horses and Scottish cattle still roam wild. Recently the beaver and otter have been reintroduced to the area. A lovely piece of nature until you arrive in beautiful Nijmegen. There you can enjoy a beautiful piece of city history with monumental buildings, old church buildings and towers. Nijmegen has been a very important city since Roman times and this is reflected in the architecture. The statues, the footbridges and the ruins in the Hunnerpark are very reminiscent of this. For the most convivial spot you have to be on the main market.
